Integration deadline: 3 years and extensions
When does the deadline start?
The 3-year deadline starts running from the date you become subject to the integration duty — for example, the date of your residence permit. DUO informs you by letter when your deadline starts and ends.
Grounds for extension
You can apply for an extension for valid reasons, for example:
- Illness or a medical limitation
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Waiting times at a course provider that aren't your fault
- Other situations of force majeure that DUO recognizes
Always apply for an extension before your deadline expires, with evidence of your situation.
What if I don't get an extension?
If you miss the deadline without a valid reason, DUO can impose a fine. Always respond to letters from DUO and ask your municipality for help in time if you're struggling.
